UK Enacts Ban on Plastic Wet Wipes To Tackle Environmental Harm

The UK government has officially passed legislation banning the sale of wet wipes containing plastic, with the law set to take effect in spring 2027. The move follows years of complaints from water companies, which spend an estimated £200 million annually clearing blockages caused by non-biodegradable wipes.

According to official data, UK consumers purchased 32 billion wet wipes in 2023, with approximately 12 billion containing plastic fibers. These plastic-containing products do not break down in sewage systems, forming fatbergs that damage infrastructure and release microplastics into waterways. The ban applies to retail sales in England, with Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland implementing similar measures.

Industry bodies such as EDANA have welcomed the regulation, noting that 95% of public consultation respondents supported the ban. Major retailers including Tesco and Boots have already phased out plastic wipes, with Nice-Pak reporting that 96% of its UK sales are now plastic-free. However, exceptions remain for medical wipes and business-to-business supply.

This legislation aligns with EU environmental directives and marks a significant shift toward sustainable hygiene products. Manufacturers are accelerating transitions to plant-based fibers like bamboo and cotton to comply with global green standards.
